The I Ching is an ancient oracle first written by Chinese spiritual leaders circa 2500 B.C.  Our research suggests it is possible this was a written account of a more ancient verbal tradition.  Readings, selected at random by tossing coins or drawing cards, yield guidance from divine source.

The I Ching is a book combining wisdom with divine connection and guidance.

Some say the I Ching is the first book ever written.  It is, as I have experienced it for over 30 years, both a collection of deepest wisdom gathered over human history, and a direct way to communicate with spirit, or whatever you choose to call it – God, life force, universal mind, infinite wisdom, The Force, source.

The combination of these two gives spirit a way to point precisely at the principles that will serve you and all whom you effect at each moment, the best guidance.

I continue to experience a deepening of the profound wisdom each time I consult the I Ching.  It is such a blessing.  An example of this profound deepening is Number 22, Grace.  For many years, I thought grace was about outer ways one appears and treats others.  Recently I realized it is n a sense, the opposite.  True grace comes from true deep inner goodness.  Your deepest benevolent intentions create true grace.

Now I am writing my own version by synthesizing the best understanding I can derive from consulting a number of other authors of the I Ching.  The work has been most fulfilling.  I prepare for each day doing a reading the evening before.  When I throw the coins and get a reading for which I have already written my version, most often I experience profound guidance.  I am not claiming the guidance is mine as the writing seems to come through me rather than from me.  It is like an inner voice looking over my shoulder and gently saying, Yes, that is the right word, or metaphor, or example, or principle.  All I have to do is just keep tuned in and let the writing happen.  Coming back to the writing as a reader, I am invariably empowered by applying the principles.

My purpose in adding another version of the I Ching is to apply my trade as a writer to my life’s mission to stimulate and participate with others in the transformation of the world to a state of Total Permanent World Peace and Prosperity (TPWP&P).  From my studies of peace processes and from my education, training and practice as a psychologist, I believe this is doable, worth doing, and lifegiving.

The cost of a thing is the amount of what I will call life which is required to be exchanged for it, immediately, or in the long run.  Henry David Thoreau

And I would say the inverse holds true.  The value of a thing is the amount of life it adds.

I have found the I Ching to be the most profoundly empowering experience of my life.  I experience it as direct access to divine will and wisdom for my specific challenges in any moment.  I feel moved to add whatever understanding and inspiration I am able to this noble work.

From my point of view, the personal transformation made available in consulting the I Ching contributes greatly to creating we humans as individuals necessary to achieve TPWP&P.  My experience of the version of the I Ching that spirit has blessed me with, shall I say transcribing as it whispers within, is one of powerful transforming experience, particularly in the face of challenge.

The bulk of it came at a very creative, stressful, and paradoxically joyful time in my life when I first moved with my beloved wife, Jude, to our land in Costa Rica.  Great motivation, joy, frustration, beauty, love, and challenges all came together in abundance and made nightly I Ching contemplation and writing a powerful salve, creation, joy and counsel at this time.  I really needed strong medicine to get through these challenges whole and complete.  This demanded that I not hold back in the healing, wise, soothing guiding words that came through.

The Story of the I Ching Essence Cards

For 30 years I’ve risen early, consulted the oracle, and entered deep meditation on its wisdom as I begin my day.  When my wife was a busy executive, she rose early with abundant energy and moved rapidly into her day.  I drafted these cards during my early morning meditations to focus her attention to the wisdom of the I Ching in her early morning whirlwind.

Contemplating and Meditating

You may use one or more of the 64 readings during meditation and contemplation.  Start each day meditating on the theme inspired by a randomly picked card.  Reconsider the message throughout the day.  For guidance on a specific subject, contemplate with the message from one, two or more randomly drawn cards.  In meditation, let life itself, guide you wisely and with pure love.  To tune into this voice, go to a safe and quiet place and sit in a relaxed, vertical posture.  Quiet your mind, bring awareness to your heart, let go of thoughts as they arise.  Be receptive to the voice within that comes from pure knowingness, love and wisdom.  You will know when this happens because you will not have willed it.

I Ching Circles

Convene a circle of friends.  Set sacred space by lighting a candle.  Each person chooses a card, then reads the card to all.  The person reading the card speaks about the relevance of the reading and friends may respond.  Continue until all have read a card, spoken to its relevance and heard the response of friends.  Close the circle with gratitude for friends and connection.
